Florists from across North Wales and the North West of England have made the journey to Northop College to show off their creative flair and battle it out in the prestigious World Skills UK Floristry Competition’s regional finals.
Competitors from floristry shops and colleges across the region joined with Northop College students in a bid to be named as the best florist in the area and the opportunity to then go and compete in the national final which will take place live at the RHS Tatton Flower Show in the summer.
The competitors, who were grouped into two categories dependant on experience, were challenged to create either a display for an X-Factor dinner or a ‘funky bouquet’ for a wedding. They were required to then present their creations in a given space for the competition’s judges to mark anonymously.
As a special treat for the competitors, award winning and highly renowned, celebrity florist and Britain’s Got Talent Finalist, Ian Lloyd attended the event, providing a special demonstration giving advice and guidance while the judging took place.
Run in over 50 skill areas, the WorldSkills UK Competitions test competitors’ knowledge and practical application against current industry benchmarks. By inspiring learners to be their best through skills competitions, they aim to unlock the potential of the UK’s current and future workforce.
Deeside College Head of Programmes for Floristry, Catering and Skills for Independent Living, Paul Raven said: “We are honoured to be hosting the WorldSkills UK Competition Heat. We are a strong supporter of skills competitions as they are a proven mechanism through which we can spark the ambitions of learners and help raise standards across the industry.”
Results for the competition will be announced in the coming weeks after moderation has taken place.
Ends.
