Deeside CollegeDeeside College students and staff celebrated Fairtrade fortnight (February 28 – March 13, 2011) in style this year, with a fortnight of themed activities.

Deeside College is committed to supporting Fairtrade and were the first college in Wales to secure Fairtrade status from the Fairtrade Foundation. Activities for the fortnight were spread across the college’s four sites and included treasure hunts, ball games (using Fairtrade sports balls) stalls showcasing Sainsbury’s Fairtrade products and Fairtrade hamper raffles, and also name the banana man! As part of their Welsh Baccalaureate studies, students also explored the impact of Fairtrade on the Fairtrade Cooperatives which benefit from the Fairtrade Premium.

Deeside College promotes Fairtrade all year round with local representatives from Flintshire’s Fairtrade Committee selling Fairtrade products and displaying literature on a monthly basis. In partnership with their catering contractors Sodexo, Deeside College also offer Fairtrade snacks and drinks in their cafes and use Fairtrade tea and coffee in all their hospitality.

Robert Walford, Head of Commercial Operations and Chair of the College’s Fairtrade Committee said ” We have had our status as a Fairtrade College renewed once again by the Fairtrade Foundation and we are serious about the promotion of Fairtrade throughout the year and especially in Fairtrade Fortnight. We shall be using food and fun based activities at key points during the rest of the year to complement the educational awareness raising we provide in students’ tutorial sessions.”
