The Land-based Learner of the Year Awards, held 26 November during this year’s Winter Fair on the Royal Welsh Showground, celebrates the most exceptional and inspiring learners in Wales’ land-based and environmental industries. The awards were presented by Alun Davies AM, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and European Programmes.
Lindsy, who is now a Countryside Ranger in Wrexham said:
“After being made redundant I was inspired to take on new challenges and follow my dream of becoming a countryside ranger.”
Lindsy recently completed her Level 5 HND in Forestry and Arboriculture at the Bangor University course through Coleg Llysfasi. Lindsy was nominated by her tutor Phil Venables for her determination to succeed in her studies despite facing personal and family adversities.
Kevin Thomas, Lantra National Director Wales, said:
“Lindsy really impressed the judges with her enthusiasm and determination to achieve her dream of becoming a full time countryside ranger with Wrexham Borough Council.” Lindsy progressed with her studies from Level 2 to Level 5 whilst working part-time at a leisure centre and full-time as a refuse collector to fund her studies.
Jazz attended Northop College and was nominated by his tutor Nicolette Evans after excelling in his horticulture training programme. “I enjoy working outside and creating wonderful gardens which bring great satisfaction to my customers” explains Jazz. Jazz is eager to continue his horticulture studies and has secured a full time position with Actual Landscapes in Hawarden.
Kevin Thomas, Lantra National Director Wales, said:
“Jazz is a great example of how following your passions can help you to build a fulfilling career. Jazz has seized every opportunity to learn and has approached his work and training courses with enthusiasm and dedication. I would like to congratulate Jazz and all of this year’s nominees for the outstanding work they do.”
Deeside College Group of Colleges Principal, David Jones said:
“We are extremely proud of Lindsy and Jazz in securing these awards, both are very deserving individuals who have shown a huge amount of dedication to their own development during their time at college. Both have now progressed from college to take employment in the careers of their choice, in which I am sure they will continue to prosper.
“I would also like to congratulate Osian Davies, for securing a runner up place at these awards. Osian, who is still studying at Coleg Llysfasi is also a very committed student, who has a bright future ahead of him.”
