Among the highest achieving subjects was A2 Art and Design, in which all students achieved A*-C grades, with 66.7% gaining a top A* grade.  A2 French also saw impressive results with all students achieving A* – B grades, while 25% of A2 Mathematics students received an A* grade.

Deeside College Vice Principal for Curriculum and Quality, Ian Dickson said:

“I am extremely proud of the results that we have seen here today.  My congratulations go to all our A level students and to the staff who have helped them achieve such excellent results”.

Among those celebrating at Deeside College was Lucy Iball who is on top of the world after achieving an amazing straight A* profile in her A level results.

Lucy (18) from Connah’s Quay gained the top results in her Maths, Chemistry and Physics exams, she also successfully completed the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate qualification alongside her A level courses. Lucy is now preparing to study Chemistry at Durham University.

Lucy said:

“I am really pleased with my results and am now looking forward to starting University in September.  College has been great and I have made a lot of good friends here, I think that it prepares you well for going off to University”.

Another higher achiever at Deeside College was James Preece (18) from Connah’s Quay, who is now set for Cambridge University after achieving A*, A*, A, A.

James, will be starting a Degree in Law at the prestigious University after excelling in his Law, Maths, Psychology and Physics A Levels.  James’ ambition is to become a Barrister and his outstanding A level results represent an important step towards achieving this goal.

While at Deeside College, James has built up an exceptional track record of achievements.  He also undertook the Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate qualification while studying for his A levels and became one of only a small number of Welsh students chosen to participate in a ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’, Holocaust project.   Through this, James completed assignments for Hull University after visiting Auschwitz and attending seminars in Cardiff.  His work about prejudice and racial hate has now been shown to hundreds of other students.

Speaking after receiving his results, James said:

“I am very excited about the next step in my life.  Getting a place at Cambridge University and achieving my grades were major personal ambitions for me and I am proud that I have now achieved this.  I have had a lot of opportunities to work on extra projects around my A levels which have helped me in developing a number of additional skills”.

Other Deeside College students enjoying A* success included girlfriend and boyfriend Alex Connah (19) from Buckley who achieved an A* in Law and an A in both Politics and History and Sophie Cahill (18) from Shotton who also achieved and A* in Law and an A in both History and Sociology.  Alex is going onto Cardiff University to study History and Sophie to Durham University to also study History.

The joy at Deeside College was also shared by mature student Claire Gilder from Hawarden, who started her birthday celebrations early, when she received A, A, B in her English Language, History and English Literature exams.

The mother of two, who will turn 37 on Saturday, saw an opportunity to turn her life around when she was made redundant from her retail job two years ago.

After seeking advice upon her redundancy she decided that it was the right time to start thinking about developing her skills and possibly going to University.

Now having achieved the required results at A level, Claire is getting ready to start an English Language course at Chester University in September, with a view to pursuing a career teaching English Language to adults in the future.

Claire said:

“Studying for A levels at Deeside College has been a fabulous experience.  The tutors were great and provided a lot of support.  I am proof that it is never too late to come back into education”.
