Deeside College has Learndirect centres based within the Learning Zone on the Deeside College main campus and at Airbus in Broughton.

Call into or phone one of our Learndirect centres to arrange a time for your personal induction/enrolment. You'll have a warm and friendly welcome and it usually takes approximately one hour for us to help you get started on your learndirect course.

Ongoing support is available at certain times during the week (please ask your local centre for times).

Robert Hellen

Robert Hellen had a very poor experience of school with little or no support and struggled with his education and was thought to have a learning difficulty and moved through several special schools without success.

2 years ago Robert was diagnosed with Celiac disease, which is an imbalance in the body's nutrients which inhibits development. Since diagnosis and treatment and after a gap of 30 years has returned to learning and is now very enthusiastic for learning and making huge effort to make up for lost opportunities and time.

As a result of guidance and support from learndirect tutors Robert enrolled on an IT2 Word Processing course. He chose learndirect because of the flexibility it offers and fits in with other commitments. Robert has now completed his word processing course and has enrolled on ECDL. Robert says "Learndirect has helped enormously in moving my life forward. These small steps have lead to confidence which have increased with success". He also said that learndirect has given him a sense of achievement and the will to aim higher.

Given his past experience in education and his incorrect "pigeon holing" as someone with learning difficulties, Robert has shown that he has the will and determination to make up for lost time and puts a lot of that down to the confidence gained from using learndirect and the level of support received from Deeside College staff. Robert is applying for a place on an Access to HE course at the college.

Chris Wilcock

Chris is currently a full-time student at Deeside College undertaking an NVQ 2 in Food and Drink Service and Professional Cookery and chose learndirect for his Enrichment participation. He has enrolled and achieved completion on 10 Business and Management courses since September 2007 and has recently enrolled on 'The Complete ECDL Essentials - MS 2003' to expand his Computing knowledge and qualifications for future job prospects and with an aim of progressing onto 'The Complete ECDL Extra - MS 2003'.

The Enrichment programme at Deeside College is a timetabled event where students can decide on which topics / areas of study they would like to attend to enrich their Deeside College journey, their course choices do not need to be related to their full-time programme. Chris undertook learndirect to enrich his business and management sense.

Chris aims to one day own his own restaurant and it is not uncommon to see him browsing the business papers in the Learning Zone during a computer break to evaluate businesses and restaurants that are up for sale.

Chris is already an extremely focused student , and is an inspiration to young men his age in showcasing his learndirect achievements. Chris has undertook the study of learndirect courses from a highly practical full-time course in Catering and has fully embraced the ethos of learndirect study.
