College Merger Proposal will create a new Regional College for North East Wales

Deeside College
Two of the North Wales’ most successful colleges have signed an agreement that signals their intent to merge. The Governing Bodies of Deeside College, based at Connah’s Quay and Northop; and Coleg Llysfasi based in Ruthin and Wrexham, have recently signed a Heads of Agreement that will lead to a planned merger on 1 August 2010. This will build on the merger of Deeside College with the Welsh College of Horticulture in August 2009, and will create the largest Land-based college in Wales, and one of the largest in the UK. The merged college will be uniquely placed to support learners, employers and communities across North East Wales and beyond, and will offer the most comprehensive range of education and training in the North Wales region. The combined college would serve over 25,000 students, through a workforce of over 1,000 staff, and have an annual income of over £36million.

“We have been working in partnership with Coleg Llysfasi for the past year on these exciting new proposals” said Paul Williams, Chair of Deeside College, “in the New Year we will shortly begin formal consultation with stakeholders, prior to seeking final approval from the Welsh Assembly Government. This is a very exciting and significant development for North Wales and for the whole of Wales”.

“Both colleges already have very strong links to support the local economy,” added Mike Pickering, OBE, Chair of Llysfasi. “Hopefully the end of the recession is just around the corner, so ensuring that we have a highly skilled workforce in Wales is essential. Our merger proposals will ensure that this achieved, through partnership with business of all sizes, to support the North Wales economy”.

The opportunity to bring together the resources and expertise of Coleg Llysfasi with the former Welsh College of Horticulture is also at the heart of the planned merger. Deeside College Principal, David Jones explained, “The Land-based sector, in its various guises has always been crucial in Wales, and with environmental issues and sustainability, together with leisure and tourism-based aspects rightly taking centre stage, there has never been a more important time for the sector. We have already begun work with the wide range of organisation and stakeholders who form the land based sector in Wales, and we are committed to working with them to develop a new ambitious strategy, that will serve their needs, and put the new college at the forefront on a UK and international basis”

The merger will also, very importantly, support wider developments across North East Wales, particularly in partnership with local authorities. “The new college will largely operate, alongside other colleges and schools, across the counties of Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham; and with the universities of Bangor and Glyndwr with whom they already have established and effective partnerships ”, explained Fred Cunningham, Principal of Coleg Llysfasi. “Both colleges already have excellent links with the local authorities, who are themselves also looking at new proposals to enhance education and training opportunities, linked to the Welsh Assembly Government’s “Transformation” agenda. We are committed to partnership, not competition”, he added, “and this will importantly allow us to build on Llysfasi’s expertise to enable the new college to expand and improve the range of courses and services available through the medium of Welsh and bilingually”.
