Landmark Merger Creates New college for North East Wales

Deeside College
Following Welsh Assembly Government approval, on 1st August 2009 Deeside College and the Welsh College of Horticulture merged. The new institution, which will be one of the largest in Wales and the UK, will provide courses for almost 20,000 students each year, will employ over 800 staff, and will have an annual income approaching £30million.

The creation of a dynamic merged college able to serve the diverse needs of North East Wales and the particular needs of the land based sector will deliver many benefits to the region. The “one-stop-shop” will provide learners and employers with the widest range of easily accessible courses in North Wales. The merger will provide security for the future of land based provision in North Wales, including horticulture, equine studies, floristry, small animal care and agricultural engineering. Building on developing strategic links with Coleg Llysfasi in the Vale of Clwyd, the new college will continue to develop and expand provision to support the land based sector more generally across North Wales. The new college will also provide learners with a broader range of courses available through the medium of Welsh.

Principal of the new merger college, Mr David Jones, who is clear that the merger is a step forward for the colleges and further education in Wales, said: "We are delighted by this achievement which will bring together two very successful further education colleges in North East Wales. Both colleges have a long and proud history of providing excellent education and working together in partnership. We are confident that this merger will build on these foundations and enhance learning opportunities to support businesses, communities and individuals in the region. We are also pleased that the development will strengthen our links with Glyndwr University, who as part of the changes will establish a base in Flintshire, at the Northop Campus."

Mr Jones went on to say: "I am confident that through our excellent staff we have the skills, capacity and experience to establish the college as an international centre of excellence for Further Education and vocational learning, as we will play an important part of the Wales Assembly Government’s rightly ambitious policies for education, lifelong learning and skills."
