Deeside College and Welsh Assembly Government opens up a new career for Lee

Deeside College
Lee Balshaw from Flint had been made redundant from his job as a Planner Coordinator for a local construction firm, and was unsure about his next career move. Having contacted Careers Wales, Lee was made aware of ReAct funding, a Welsh Assembly Government scheme to help individuals gain new skills, overcome obstacles and return to work in the shortest time possible.

Following his meeting with a Careers Wales Advisor, Lee decided he wanted to re-train in the field of Health and Safety Management and contacted Deeside College to discuss the courses available to him through ReAct funding. Between himself and Steve Mason, Deeside College’s Health and Safety courses co-ordinator, they decided that the NEBOSH General Certificate was the course that would give Lee the best chance of securing a position in Health and Safety. During the first year of his studies, Steve contacted Lee to say Cranswick Convenience Foods had been in touch with the College to see if they had any suitable candidates for a Health and Safety position that had become available. Within two weeks, Lee had completed the interview process and had taken the first steps on his new career in Health and Safety, securing the position of Health and Safety Co-ordinator. Eighteen months on, Lee has completed the NEBOSH General Certificate and has progressed on to the NEBOSH Fire Safety and Management course and his employers have encouraged him to pursue further Health and Safety courses available at Deeside College.

Re-act funding is available to individuals who have been made redundant in the last six months or are facing redundancy. Applicants can receive up to £2,500 to help them with their training needs and courses are available across a whole range of areas including Information Technology, Management Skills, Engineering, Forklift Truck driving, Catering and Hospitality, Horticulture and many more. Those interested in accessing ReAct funding are encouraged to contact their local Careers Wales office first before contacting Deeside College.

Lee said: “The support I received from ReAct funding really helped me take those first steps back in to learning new skills and training in a new field. I haven’t looked back since and I am thoroughly enjoying my new career path, it’s challenging, exciting and everyday is different. I am really enjoying training at Deeside College and am extremely grateful to Steve Mason and the Health and Safety team.”

Deeside College Head of Faculty for Employer Engagement, Patrick Leonard, added: “ReAct training is about getting people back to work as quickly as possible. Lee is a shining example of this and we wish him all the best in his new career. I would encourage anyone who has been made redundant recently to consider ReAct funding to support training. “
