Papyrus becomes our Charity of the Year

Deeside College students and staff are hoping to raise lots of money for their new chosen charity of the year, PAPYRUS. PAPYRUS is a UK charity committed to prevention of young suicide, and the emotional well-being and positive mental health of children, teenagers and young adults. The charity provides help to young people worried about themselves and others concerned about them. PAPYRUS also produces resources for young people, their parents, families, friends and carers, schools colleges and universities and all who work with young people.
Students and staff at Deeside College are now planning a series of fundraising events and activities for the coming year. From Dragon Boat racing, white water rafting and sky diving to sponsored walks, bike rides and marathons, it promises to be a busy year. Last year through a range of different fundraising events, the college was able to pledge £26,726 to the NSPCC.
On 10th September 2009, Anne Parry, PAPYRUS chair, joined College staff including Principal David Jones, BTEC National Diploma in Child Care Learning and Development and NVQ level 2 Equine Studies students from the college’s Northop Campus to officially launch the year’s fundraising.
David Jones, Principal and Chief Executive at Deeside College, said,
Deeside College aims to provide more than just education and training; we encourage students to become true citizens who get involved in their local community and help others. By taking part in fundraising activities, students gain new skills and increase their self confidence. I am so impressed by, and proud of the generosity of our staff, who freely give their time, money and commitment and raise large sums of money for charity. Everyone involved with the college is looking forward to another busy year of fundraising. I know our students and staff will give 100% commitment to PAPYRUS, to raise as much money as possible to help raise the profile of this very worthwhile charity.
Talking at the launch event Anne Parry said,
The work the students and staff at Deeside College do for their chosen charity is renowned and we’re delighted to have been chosen as their charity of the year. We are looking forward to working with the students and staff to help raise funds to support our national helpline - HOPELineUK 0800 068 41 41 - and increasing awareness that confidential help is available.
